BRIEF: Ashtabula City Schools drop uniform requirement

ASHTABULA, Jul 28, 2011 (Star Beacon - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The decision came after the Board of Education met and reviewed survey data collected from parents and staff regarding school uniforms for the 2011-12 school year. The surveys were conducted by the public-relations and communications subcommittee of the elementary campus transition committee.

"Based on the overwhelming response from the parent survey, the Board of Education approved the recommendation that for the 2011-12 school year, no schools will require uniforms for students," Donatone said. "This also includes Saybrook Elementary School, which was previously a uniform school." School board member Alfred DeCato said 74 percent of the teachers and staff wanted a dress code, but 61 percent of the parents did not want a dress code.

During the annual evaluation of the student dress code, which will occur later on during the upcoming school year, the school board and a district committee will review the dress-code policy. DeCato said the evaluation team will make the dress code "a little more restrictive" than it is now.

"The board of education appreciates the valuable input from all staff, parents and community members in arriving at this decision," Donatone said.
