Russellville and Logan County excel at state track meet

Jun 03, 2011 (News-Democrat & Leader - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Both Russellville and Logan County High schools sent athletes off to the state track meet this past week. Now while it is impressive to get to state, it's even more impressive when you place in the top 10 in the entire state in any event. Both the Panthers and Cougars had a few runners open eyes and take home some medals for themselves and some pride for their school and the entire county.

Russellville sent quite a few runners to the Class A track and field meet and three came home with some hardware. Senior Victor Hampton completed his high school career coming out with a first place finish in the high jump with a jump of 6 feet two inches. Quintin Calloway, only a junior, finished sixth in the entire state for triple jump with a jump of 40 feet and 8 1/2 inches.

Perhaps the most impressive was Diamond Hines, only a seventh grader, taking gold in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.82 seconds.

Logan County also sent a few runners to the state track and field meet. Competeing in the Class 2A they had a few runners bring home some hardware. The boys 3200 meter relay team, consisting of Sye Head, Maruice Pheal, Barrett Rogers and Noah Thomas, finished sixth in the state with a time of 8:25.99. The 1600 meter relay team finished eigth with a time of 3:32.53 with a team of Avrey Collier, Maruice Pheal, Barrett Rogers and Colton Spencer. Collier also finished fourth in the state in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.69 . Markita Pheal finished tenth in the state in the open 400 meter dash with a time of 1:03.44.

The state track and field meet was a great way to cap off a very successful season for both programs.

Russellville competed in a lot of meets against some very tough schools and succeeded, which showed in their performance at the state track meet. They are a young team and will constantly get better and better as they get more experience and more training in. Look for just as good if not better results from this team next season.

Logan County, while not quite as young as their cross town rivals, they are still a relatively young team. They had to compete against some power house programs around the state and still came out near the top, if not on top in most of their meets. Look for them next year to get a a few more runners and athletes to fill out their roster. If they get those select athletes in their program, look for them to outright win a lot of meets next year.
