Cab Drivers Complain to DRTS Over Harassment

Jul 22, 2011 (Daily Trust/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- Members of the Painted Commercial Taxi Drivers Association, Abuja (COTDAA), Wednesday complained to top officials of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) over harassment by some officials of the directorate.

The association's Chairman, Shugaba Shehu Yar 'adua, made the complain when he led a delegation of the association's executives on a courtesy visit to the Director of DTRS, Major Adamu Argungu at his office in Abuja.

He lamented that his members usually have their cabs impounded by DRTS officials and are made to pay as much as N25,000 fines for illegal parking of their vehicles.

Yar 'adua wondered how taxi drivers are expected to operate in the city centre according to laid down rules, when they don't have parks to operate in.

He said creating mini parks for commercial cab drivers will checkmate the activities of "one chance operators", whom he said have capitalized on such absence to wreck havoc on innocent commuters.

The chairman appealed to the DRTS boss to counsel his officials to be courteous and humane, while dealing with cab drivers, especially when they commit traffic offences.

Responding, DTRS FCT Director, retired Major Adamu Argungu, assured the association of the directorate's readiness to partner with them for effective traffic control in the territory.

He urged the association leaders to ensure that their members have the required documents and maintain orderliness while driving on the road.

The DRTS boss also warned motorists who use unpainted vehicles for commercial purposes to desist or risk sanction.
