China's 3G penetration rate 9.5 pct, only a whisker away from full-scale applica
BEIJING, Jul 22, 2011 (Xinhua via COMTEX) --
China's three telecom operators,
China Mobile (CHL.NYSE; 00941.HK), China Unicom (CHU.NYSE; 00762.HK;
600050.SH) and China Telecom (CHA.NYSE; 00728.HK), have all released
their operating statistics for June in this week, showing China's 3G
usage penetration rate came to 9.5 percent at the end of the first
half of 2011.
Chen Jinqiao, deputy chief engineer of the Chinese Academy of
Telecommunication Research under the Ministry of Industry and
Information Technology (MIIT), previously noted that when the 3G
penetration rate reached 10 percent, it marked the arrival of a
critical point for the technology when full-scale application of the
third generation of telecommunication technology would begin.
The latest operating statistics of the three telecom operators
show that the number of China's total 3G service subscribers exceeds
80 million as of the end of June 2011, while the number of the
country's total cell phone users has reached more than 882 million
Specifically, the number of 3G service subscribers of China
Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom amounted to 35.027 million,
23.945 million, and 21.54 million respectively. And user numbers of
the three companies separately reached 616 million, 158 million, and
