Arts Center fundraiser offers cool treats

Jul 20, 2011 (The Herald Bulletin - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- ANDERSON, Ind. -- When The Anderson Center for the Arts opened in the '60s, ice cream socials were among the first fundraisers.

"When I was a kid it was so much fun," said Bill Beeler, arts center board member. "There were booths everywhere." It's an event Anderson Center for Arts director Deborah Stapleton and board members decided to revive.

"We were looking for a summer fundraiser to offset the Oktoberfest," Beeler said.

Today's event, held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Citizens Plaza Park,at Ninth and Main streets, is $6 and includes a hot dog, chips, drink, ice cream and choice of homemade dessert.

"This will be the first time (for the ice cream social) in many years. We will have homemade cakes, pies and other desserts to go with the ice cream," she said. "We are putting together a cook booklet that includes some of the recipes." Stapleton said the cook booklets will sell for less than $5.

"All the recipes have been kitchen and time tested," she said.

Community Hospital will provide music with '50s flair.

"There will be Prairie Farms ice cream and ice tea," Beeler said. "Hoosier Park helped, too." Other help came from volunteers, staff and community members.

"Just come and enjoy and take a little break," Stapleton said, "We're hoping people will stop by on their lunch break. If they can't stay, takeout boxes will be available." The arts center hopes to sell 300 lunches and has already sold 100 tickets.

"We thought we'd try it," Stapleton said. "If it turns out, maybe we could make it an annual event." Contact April Abernathy: 640-4861 or [email protected].
