1st LD: Murdoch denies responsiblity for phone hacking scandal

LONDON, Jul 19, 2011 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Rupert Murdoch on Tuesday denied the responsibility for the phone hacking scandal of the News of the World , but said that "the people he trusted or perhaps those they trusted" were responsible.

"This is the most humble day of my life," said Murdoch at the opening of a hearing, which was held by the culture, media and sport committee of British Parliament.

He also said that there was no evidence showing Rebecca Brooks, chief executive of News International, had directed the phone-hacking of some journalists.

He added that he was not aware of the extent of phone hacking at the tabloid newspaper was more widespread than originally thought until earlier this year when it handed over new information to the police.

Murdoch emphasized that the News of the World was "just one percent" of his entire worldwide business and that he employed "people I trust to run these divisions." Rupert Murdoch and his son James Murdoch, chairman of News International, initially refused to appear before the committee but changed their minds after they were issued with a summons to attend.

James apologized for the phone hacking scandal, saying "I would like to say just how sorry I am and just how sorry we are."
