Mat boss saga goes OT

SUNBURY, Jul 15, 2011 (The Daily Item - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Popular wrestling coach Brett Michaels may have escaped a job-ending pin.

Because Shikellamy school board director Slade Shreck has campaigned to hold a special voting meeting, Michaels -- whose rehiring failed Tuesday because of a lack of a favorable majority vote -- may have another round left in him.

Board President Tim Fister told Shreck that, under Pennsylvania School Code, in order for directors to hold a special meeting, three members had to put the request in writing and deliver it to to him.

"If he gets the members, then we will have the meeting," Fister said. "I have no objections to holding another meeting on this." As of Thursday, Fister said he had not received the request.

"If it is the board's wish, then we will meet," Fister said.

Michaels has been under fire since a May meeting in which the board voted to open the coaching position that Michaels has held for 10 years.

Michaels has been accused of a hazing incident that was said to have happened at a wrestling camp three years ago.

He has denied the allegations and has not said much about what, if anything, happened.

On Tuesday, for the second time in three months, school directors were deadlocked 4-4 on whether to open the position of wrestling coach and rehire Michaels.

Director Preston Ross was absent from the vote in May, while Lori Garman was absent Tuesday night.

Fister, who in May voted to open the job, changed his vote Tuesday and decided to keep Michaels.

"Everyone deserves a second chance," Fister said. "I said before that if he wants to reapply, then he should." Michaels was thrilled to learn he stills has hope.

"I teach the kids that we need to learn from adversity and get through it," he said Thursday. "I absolutely look forward to another vote." Ross said Tuesday he had new evidence against Michaels that led him to vote against retaining Michaels, but Fister said Ross had only what the entire board received in May.

"He was absent and had no knowledge of any reports on Michaels," Fister said. "There was no new information." Fister declined to say what the reports stated, but did say he wasn't changing his vote if another meeting is called.

Fister mulled resigning from the board Tuesday, but said he reconsidered.

"It wasn't the right thing to do," he said. "I spoke with board members and it just wasn't the right thing to do." Fister also said he was not pressured by anyone to change his vote.
