Detroit Free Press The 'stevies' column

Jul 17, 2011 (Detroit Free Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Each week, Steve Schrader hands out "Stevies" to the best, the worst and the weirdest from the week that was in sports. This week's Stevies: To Mike Commodore, the new Red Wings defenseman who's considering a grassroots effort to get him to wear jersey No. 64 as an homage to the vintage Commodore 64 computer. If he does, it also could lead to some kind of tie-in with a company marketing an updated version of the computer. Yeah, sounds like a plan. But why stop there? Maybe Jakub Kindl could pay tribute to the Kindle 2.

The 'Put a Ring on It' award To Christian Lopez, the N.Y. Yankees fan whose booty for giving Derek Jeter the home run ball he hit for his 3,000th hit now includes a 2009 World Series ring. Which, coincidentally, ties him with A-Rod.

The 'Not a Bad Rebounder' award To Elin Nordegren, who reportedly is dating an American financier whose daddy is a billionaire. So Tiger might still be sidelined, but she isn't.

The 'Put His Money Where His Mouth Is' award To NFL negotiators, the players and the owners, who reportedly are moving closer and closer to an agreement that will save the season. Apparently common sense started to prevail when everybody realized there really is enough money to go around, especially after they get back to business and start fining James Harrison.
