Tigers notes, quotes from loss to White Sox

Jul 16, 2011 (Detroit Free Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- WHAT HAPPENED: Chicago scored the game's first four runs off Justin Verlander in the third inning and rolled from there. Verlander gave up more than one run in a game for the first time in his last eight starts. Chicago right-hander Gavin Floyd went 7 2/3 innings and allowed two runs. The Tigers fell a game behind first-place Cleveland.

OVERHEARD: "He just wasn't really on top of his game, but he certainly wasn't bad. A couple of breaking balls that were up got hit," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland about Verlander.

CABRERA LOOKS FINE: Three days after he left the All-Star Game with pain in his side, Miguel Cabrera homered over the Tigers' bullpen on his second at-bat. And on his next at-bat ...

MILESTONE TIME: Cabrera singled in the sixth for his 1,500th career hit. The scoreboard immediately proclaimed the feat, and the crowd gave him a standing ovation.

OVERHEARD: "An amazing milestone, especially at his age. 28 years old, 1,500 -- something special. (He) could do something really special in his career," said Verlander, who's also 28, about Cabrera.

NOT AGAIN: One of Leyland's pet peeves surfaced anew -- a left-handed reliever walking a left-handed batter. David Purcey did so when he came in to face A.J. Pierzynski in the seventh. Then Gordon Beckham followed with the two-out, two-run single that made it a White Sox runaway at 8-2.

NEXT: Former Tiger Edwin Jackson pitches for Chicago this afternoon against Max Scherzer. Carlos Guillen will be back in the Tigers' lineup.

THREE STARS: 1. Adam Dunn, 2. Juan Pierre, 3. Floyd.
