Cyclists, Joggers Invade the 405 Freeway

LOS ANGELES, Jul 16, 2011 (KTLA-TV - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- It seems as though not everyone got the memo to stay off the 405 Freeway this weekend.

From joggers to bikers, police and traffic officials have been battling trespassers along the shuttered 10-mile stretch of the freeway Saturday An Orange County mortgage lender and bike enthusiast garnered a bit of media attention Saturday morning when he rode alongside a CHP officer around 6:30 a.m. on the northbound 405 Freeway.

"The CHP officer was very nice, he just said 'follow me, I'll escort you off, and don't do it again,' and I won't," he told KTLA.

"I'm glad I took the risk." Later in the day, a half dozen bikers were escorted off the closure area with a stern warning.

Another two shirtless bicyclists were arrested around 2 p.m. Saturday for trying to ride on the southbound side of the 405 near the Wilshire Boulevard exit, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesperson.

KTLA also spoke with a runner who got by unnoticed on the highway from Olympic to Wilshire Saturday morning.

"It was pretty cool," he said. "It's one of the busiest freeways in the world.... It was quite interesting." And a 70-year-old jogger was arrested shortly after 9 a.m. for using the highway. He was arrested on an outstanding warrant of public menace.
