LITTLE LEAGUE: New Albany 11-12s power past CreekSELLERSBURG, Jul 15, 2011 (The Evening News and the Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The New Albany 11-12 Baseball All-Stars' power hitters were too much for Silver Creek in Thursday's first semifinal of the 11-12 division of the District V tournament at Silver Creek Township Community Park. New Albany smacked four home runs to defeat Creek, 12-6. New Albany (5-0) advances to Monday's championship game at 8 p.m. against either Jeff/GRC or Highlander Youth Recreation. Reece Davis started New Albany's homer assault in the first inning with a two-run, two-out shot. Davis' homer was the key hit in a five-run first. In the second inning, New Albany's Luke Eskins launched his first of two homers. He drilled a two-run shot to extend New Albany's lead to 7-2. Teammate Jacob Mullins hit a two-run homer in a three-run third for New Albany. Eskins' second homer came in the top of the sixth, blasting a two-run shot to extend New Albany's advantage to 12-6. Eskins wound up 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Davis and teammate Justin Betz each went 2-for-4. New Albany's Logan Charbonneau was the winning pitcher. Blake Wurm led the Silver Creek bats, going 3-for-4. Teammate Justin Brown was 2-for-4, as Silver Creek ended District V play with a 2-3 record. 9-10 BASEBALL --Creek reaches final: Silver Creek kept its undefeated record in District V play intact by defeating HYR in the division semifinals, 10-6. Tyler Kapust paced Creek's lineup, collecting three hits. Teammate Adam Uhl had two knocks, including a double. Silver Creek starting pitcher Jack Hawkins earned the victory on the mound, pitching 4 1/3 scoreless innings. Hawkins and Creek relievers Josh Landers and Blayden McMahel combined to give up only four hits. Silver Creek (5-0) scored three runs in the second, four in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 10-0 lead. But the game did have its tense moments for Creek. HYR (2-3) scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Plus it had the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate with one out before Silver Creek got the final two outs. Silver Creek will face New Albany (4-1) in Saturday's championship. The first pitch will be at 7 p.m. New Albany won the second semifinal on Thursday over Scott County, 11-1. No other details were provided at press time. During pool play, Silver Creek defeated New Albany, 6-1. Note: The second semifinal of the 11-12 baseball division Thursday between Jeff/GRC and HYR ended after the News and Tribune copy deadline.
