BRIEF: Sheldon Church to ride in world's largest rodeo

Jul 15, 2011 (The Deming Headlight - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Sheldon Church, a Dora High School graduate, has earned a position on the Arizona State High School Rodeo team and will be traveling with fellow teammates to Gillette, Wyoming to compete in the 63rd annual National High School Finals Rodeo, July 17-23.

Church, 19, was third overall in calf roping for the state of Arizona and finished 11th at last year's nationals. He was also the Arizona State Calf Roping Champion in 2010. Church left the Deming Public Schools his sophomore year.

Featuring over 1,500 contestants from 41 states, five Canadian Provinces and Australia, the NHSF is the world's largest rodeo. In addition to competing for over $200,000 in prizes, NHSFR contestants will also be competing for more than $350,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named the NHSFR Champion. To earn this title, contestants must finish in the top 20 after two go-rounds of intense competition before advancing to Saturday night's final championship performance.

Church has been offered and accepted a scholarship to ride for the New Mexico State University Aggies Rodeo Team in Las Cruces. He will begin his Aggie career in August.

Sheldon is the son of Wendy and Greg Church of Deming.
