Police release results of warrant sweep

HIGH POINT, Jul 15, 2011 (The High Point Enterprise - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The warrant backlog of the High Point Police Department is a bit lighter after a three-day project by School Resource Officers.

Police served 92 outstanding warrants Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in an initiative at department headquarters that followed publication in The High Point Enterprise of a list of about 800 names of individuals with such papers.

The individuals whose names appeared were asked to come to the department to be served, and police officials said, in retrospect, they hoped more people had come forward during the project.

"It's a bit of a dent in (the backlog). It doesn't hurt. Serving 92 warrants in three days is pretty good," said Capt. Tony Hamrick, who supervises the SRO unit, which oversaw the project. "It didn't cost us anything. It wasn't a whole lot of effort, and all the officers were on regular duty." A magistrate on site set conditions of release for individuals on the "custody" warrants list. Most of those served were given a court date and released.

"We had a few that, if it was a pre-set bond, of course we didn't have any control over that," said Hamrick. "We had a couple true bill indictments people had on them, and they came and turned themselves in." Police sent SRO teams out to try to serve some of the warrants at times when there wasn't much traffic at headquarters.

The warrant list included criminal offenses and "non-custody" matters, such as orders to show cause and criminal summonses, that didn't require individuals to be processed at the police department.

This was the first warrant project for the department in the past few years. Police said they aren't sure when the next one will be conducted.
