Philippine navy colonel detained for calling for Aquino ouster

MANILA, Jul 15, 2011 (dpa - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A colonel in the Philippine Navy who allegedly called for the ouster of the government has been confined to his quarters, the chief of the navy said Friday.

Vice Admiral Alexander Pama said he ordered the confinement of Colonel Generoso Mariano pending an investigation of a video clip showing him calling on the people and fellow soldiers to replace the government of Benigno Aquino.

Mariano, who is set to retire on Sunday, is seen in a July 3 video clip lambasting the year-old Aquino administration for its inability to control the increase in prices of food, fuel and other basic commodities.

"Let us not be deceived by false promises, let us not allow ourselves to be used to fight against fellow Filipinos (in the southern region of) Mindanao," he allegedly said in the video clip.

"If the present government has no intention or has failed to do something to save the lives of our people, it is the duty, it is the right of every Filipino, including soldiers, to replace the government," Mariano added.

"Let us once and for all build a nation based on truth, for without it there can be no justice, and without justice we shall have no peace, and without peace there will be no development." Pama said there were no indication that Mariano had support within the navy, but authorities were looking into the possibility that some members are also espousing the same idea.
