Rawal Elected New KLTA Boss As Njeri Onyango Retains SeatJul 14, 2011 (Nairobi Star/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- Purvi Rawal is the new chairperson of the trouble-ridden Kenya Lawn Tennis Association (KLTA). Rawal replaces Patrick Gichira, who didn't offer himself for re-election, citing personal commitments elsewhere. Njeri Onyango retained her vice chairperson seat with George Kiganjo elected to the same position for the first time. The other vice chairmen included Martin Oluoch and Anthony Mungai. The secretary and treasurer posts were not filled though the association said the positions will be contested in the near future. Council members elected included former national champion Wanjiru Mbugua Karani, Wesley Kibet, Moses Kimani ,Veronica Osogo, Walter Kioko and Martha Tirop. The elections were supervised by officials from the Kenya National Sports Council (KNSC) and attended by delegates from various affiliate members. One of the resolutions passed at the AGM was the immediate commencement of the constitutional review process by the new KLTA council. A committee to be set up by the Council will collect views from members and other stakeholders and publish a draft constitution on or before November12 for approval. The elections come against a backdrop of controversy with clubs schools and individual, who have been writing letters to the Ministry of Sports to act and stop the process, they described as unfair and unconstitutional. In a joint letter to the Minister, representatives from 18 schools and clubs in Nyanza, Western and Rift Valley provinces insisted that the KLTA constitution must be in line with the Kenya document before any election takes place. Sadili Oval's Liz Odera and Mizizi tennis initiative founder Mary Muriuki were agitating for the postponement of the polls. |
