Brazilian music video shot in city club

LAWRENCE, Jul 11, 2011 (The Eagle-Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Lawrence nightclub is the backdrop for a new music video for a Brazilian Hip-Hop artist who was born in nearby Lowell.

All day yesterday, as locals headed to pools and beaches to cool down from the July heat, production of a music video for Glendor "G-Star" Alves was in full swing at the Club Copa & Lounge at 1 Mill St.

As the cameras rolled, G-Star, completely clad in black, danced with dozens of young women on the second floor of the lounge for hours.

McElroy Films of Burlington is producing G-Star's video, which is set to his new single, "Night Away." In the song, G-Star finds a pair of 3D glasses that transport him to a vibrant night club bustling with dancers. In an instant, he focuses on the girl of his dreams and they dance the "Night Away." Benjamin McElroy, a former Lowell Sun photographer who is now the president and executive producer of his own film company, said Club Copa graciously agreed to open their doors for the day-time video production there. Club Copa is open from 10 p.m. to closing Thursday through Sunday.

"There's a small intimate feeling here, which is really nice," McElroy explained as a production crew worked around him.

A casting call went out in June for video extras and models were also brought in from a local agency to surround G-Star on the dance floor, McElroy said.

"We wanted it to make it look a club but we didn't want 100 extras," he said, describing the piece as a "flashy, eye candy music video." McElroy's company also produces training and education videos, Web videos and independent films.

Scenes for G-Star's video will also be shot in Leominster, he said.

Once the music video is completed, probably within the next few weeks, McElroy said the video will be posted on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and more.
