The Dallas Morning News Barry Horn column

Jul 09, 2011 (The Dallas Morning News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- ESPN has begun stocking on-air talent for the fledgling Longhorn Network.

Lowell Galindo, lead anchor, comes from ESPNU. He was raised in San Antonio.

Kevin Dunn, a one-time Austin sports talk host and Texas grad, serves as co-pilot. Samantha Steele serves as lead reporter. Her resume includes Big 12 and Pac-10 work at Fox Sports Net and Fox College Sports but shows no Texas ties. She is from Arizona and a graduate of Liberty University.

Interestingly, coordinating producer Pat Lowry, is an Aggie, A&M Class of 1987. She worked at HSE before joining ESPN in 2002.

LHN launches Aug. 26. First live event: Texas-Pepperdine women's volleyball.

Most importantly, still no word on which cable providers will offer LHN. But you can be sure deals have to be getting close. ESPN is reportedly seeking 40 cents per subscriber in the state of Texas, where there are 7.7 million cable and satellite subscribers.

ESPN hopes LHN will be placed on the same digital tier -- expanded basic with 6.4 million paying customers -- as ESPN and Fox Sports Southwest. That means everyone on the expanded basic digital tier will ante up at least 40 cents, including fans of other schools.

In case you are wondering, FSSW, which offers Rangers, Mavericks and Stars games, gets about $2.50 a month per subscriber. In Big Ten country, it's 70 cents per month.
