BRIEF: Online games played in Indonesia lack local content

JAKARTA, Jul 08, 2011 (The Jakarta Post - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Indonesian IT expert Sigit Widodo has said popular online games played in Indonesia lack local content.

"There are more than 50 A-class online games played in Indonesia, but not one has any local content," Sigit said while at a seminar titled "New Media: Becoming a host in our own country" at the Hotel Nikko in Jakarta.

He added that most games that had local content were developed based on second-rate programs vulnerable to hacking. This could harm local developers who worked hard to make games with local content, Sigit said.

The government did not provide the gaming industry with enough support compared to other creative industries, he said.

"There is some support, but mostly in non-digital creative industries, such as batik, while the future of creative industries lies in the digital realm." Sigit said the government should support game developers through funding.

"By comparison, South Korea has had a special funding agency for creative industries since the 1990s, while Malaysia has had one since 2000."
