[July 08, 2011] BRIEF: Accused ATM hacker faces additional charges Tweet Jul 08, 2011 (The Fayetteville Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Maryland man accused of hacking into a bowling alley ATM received additional charges Thursday alleging he took more than $33,000 in a six-month period, according to court documents. Devawn Jamal Walsh, 23, of Bowie, Md., is charged with 18 counts of illegally accessing computers in connection with repeated thefts at the Lafayette Bowling Lanes at 3313 Raeford Road between January and June 17, according to charging documents. Walsh was previously charged with four felony counts of illegally accessing a computer and a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge. Court documents indicate that Walsh began accessing a First Data ATM machine in the bowling alley on Jan. 30. Fayetteville police allege that he used a master code to reprogram the machine into thinking it was dispensing $1 bills rather than $20s. Walsh then used a prepaid debit card to withdraw thousands from the machine over the coming months, police allege in court documents. Police documented him fraudulently withdrawing $33,220 from the machine until June 17, the charges say. It was unclear how Walsh came into possession of the ATM's master code.
