Do you or your business need some CPR?

Jul 06, 2011 (McClatchy-Tribune - McClatchy-Tribune News Service via COMTEX) -- If you want to be successful in business, or in anything you do in life, you need to know CPR.

No, not Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation. We are not talking about practicing blowing air into the mouth of a dummy. (Keep your comments to yourself.) Instead, we're talking about being Consistent, Persistent, and Resistant. Let's take a closer look at each of these critical factors for success in any endeavor, including life.

Consistent _ Watch what successful people do every day. They do these things every day for a reason _ it works. Model their consistency.

For example, someone who is dedicated to staying in great physical shape does not got to the gym once at the beginning of the year believing that will take care of everything. It's the consistent, regular actions you take every day that make the difference.

Persistent _ There are times when things are going great. There are times when you will struggle. During each time, and every time in between, persisting toward your goals, no matter what, is a major key to success. Remember in the battle between the rock and the river, the river always wins, not necessarily because the river is stronger, but because of the power of persistence.

Two words (excuse) you will hear often from unsuccessful people is "I tried." Those can be deadly words.

Well, I tried to lose weight but I couldn't. I tried to get a business going on the Internet but nothing worked, it's all a sham anyway. And on it goes...

Most people simply refuse to persist with the consistent actions necessary for success. They wind up with reasons they failed instead of results from succeeding.

Resistant _ Resistant to what? All the voices in your life say you will not be successful at what you are doing. Sometimes that voice will be your own.

No matter what, resist and keep going. For example, I honestly believe that no one ever fails on the Internet. Some simply quit before the magic happens, because they listen to the wrong voices and do not resist them.

People are going to tell you that you can't make it. Don't listen. Resist. And you can also turn those voices into motivation. I made my high school football team in part because I neighbor told me I wouldn't make it and would get killed. I used this as motivation.

It's good to have a little "Oh yeah? Watch me!" burning inside you.
