Orange Elementary's new principal chosen

Jun 10, 2011 (Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- WATERLOO, Iowa -- The prospect of leading Orange Elementary through a building project was one of the factors that drew its new principal to the job.

Aaron Davidson, 34, of Fort Dodge accepted the Orange position last weekend. Waterloo Community Schools told Orange parents about the new principal via email and phone messages Tuesday evening. For the past two years, he has been a preschool through eighth-grade principal in Pomeroy, about 30 miles west of Fort Dodge.

In a phone interview, Davidson said he is excited about plans to construct a new school replacing Orange, noting it will offer a lot of amenities not available in the current 96-year-old building. District officials have been looking at possible sites for a school on the south edge of Waterloo, but have not yet announced a location.

Before coming to Pomeroy, Davidson was a middle school teacher in Fort Dodge schools between 2002 and 2009. He taught health and science in Fort Dodge Community Schools for all but one year. During the 2003-04 year, he was an eighth-grade science and social studies teacher for St. Edmond Middle School in Fort Dodge. The Fort Dodge native also coached middle and high school sports in the city for 12 years.

He has a bachelor's degree in elementary education from the University of Northern Iowa and a master's degree in education from Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wis. He has a middle school principal endorsement from Buena Vista University in Fort Dodge and has also gone through the Iowa Principal Leadership Academy.

Davidson starts Aug. 1, although he will spend some time in the district during the coming weeks. In addition, he and his family will be looking for housing in the community this summer. The district is still establishing his annual salary.
