5th Friday is fun for all ages, promotes downtown

Jul 05, 2011 (Aiken Standard - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Join the Aiken Young Professionals downtown July 29 for "5th Friday ... Your Friends, Your Family, Your City!" 5th Friday, which will be held in The Alley, is billed as an event for all generations. There will be children's games and inflatables, clowns, a balloon artist, dunking booth, sidewalk art and live music.

Committee Chair Selwyn DeLoach said the event is meant to bring people out, promote downtown businesses and promote Aiken Young Professionals (AYP), which strives to provide networking, community service and educational opportunities to nurture future leaders in the Aiken area.

"We are bringing another cool factor to downtown Aiken, and it's going to be a blast," DeLoach said.

Local band Anybody's Guess will perform live during 5th Friday, playing a mix of oldies, beach music and rock.

Aiken Brewing Co., Davor's, Hotel Aiken, Takosushi, Up Your Alley, The Griffin and West Side Bowery will offer food and drink specials.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. and end at 10 p.m. From 6 to 8 p.m. 5th Friday will be family and kid focused and from 8 to 10 p.m. will be focused on young professionals.

"Our goal is to promote the economy while fostering family-oriented values and providing social and networking opportunities for our young professionals," DeLoach said.

Four months out of the year have five Fridays so AYP will bring back 5th Friday every quarter. The other dates this year are Sept. 30 and Dec. 30.
