: Students Consulted on WasteJul 04, 2011 (M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) -- Pupils at QEII High School have been finding out how they can help shape the future strategy of the treatment of the Island's waste. The Department launched its Waste Consultation last month and Member for the Operations Division Graham Cregeen MHK and Head of Waste Management John Wrigley visited students at schools across the Island last week to encourage them to have their say. The Island produces approximately 200,000 tonnes of waste per year which is nearly 2.5 tonnes for every resident. To help identify key waste issues facing the Island a working group has been set up with members of the main waste producing sectors and environmental groups to produce an on-line public consultation paper, which Mr Cregeen is encouraging as many people as possible to complete. Mr Cregeen said: 'We are particularly keen for the younger generation to get involved with the waste consultation and have their say for the future of the Island. The conclusions that are drawn from this consultation could affect the future waste strategy for the next 20 years so it is vitally important that young people are encouraged to give us their views as it is themselves and their children that will be affected by the new policy and strategy. 'This consultation paper is a result of a lot hard work and I would like to thank representatives from the IOM Municipal Association, the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture, IOM Employers federation, Zero waste Mann and Friends of the Earth (IOM) for working in partnership with the Department in the development of this consultation document.' Members of the public are able to complete the consultation paper on line by visiting www.waste.gov.im . Additionally a telephone line has been set up where members of the public can leave a message and will be called back by the waste team with further information or to talk through the questionnaire - the telephone number is 686494.
