Another contract awarded for modular classrooms

JOPLIN, Mo., Jun 27, 2011 (The Joplin Globe - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Army Corps of Engineers has awarded another in a series of contracts for modular classrooms for the Joplin School District as it prepares to start the school year on Aug. 17.

The most recent is a $1 million contract for temporary classrooms serving Duquesne Elementary School pupils who will be at Duenweg Elementary School, 202 Malloy Circle. The contract was awarded to Hunter Modular Construction Co., of Jonesburg.

The contract will provide for eight classrooms, a standard gymnasium, restrooms and a storm shelter, said Sara Goodeyon, spokeswoman for the Corps of Engineers.

The company previously was awarded contracts totaling $5.5 million to install modular classrooms to serve Irving Elementary School pupils at the former Washington School, 1112 E. Second St., and for Joplin High School students at Northpark Mall.

A $1.4 million contract for modular classrooms for ninth- and 10th-graders at Memorial Education Center will include three classrooms, two science labs, a chemistry lab, an industrial lab and a greenhouse. Pangea and Brinkman Joint Venture, of St. Louis, was awarded that contract.

The St. Louis company also was awarded a $3.1 million contract for classrooms to be used by East Middle School students at the Crossroads Center Business and Distribution Park. That includes a choir room, a band room, an orchestra room, two science labs, a standard gym, restrooms and a shelter.

The Joplin School District also has initiated its Adopt-an-Eagle program, designed to provide each student who was in the path of the May 22 tornado with a backpack or duffel bag containing all the school supplies the student will need to start the school year.

School officials estimate that 54 percent of the district's students lived in the tornado zone, many of whom probably have lost homes and possessions.

It costs an average of $40 to cover the cost to outfit a backpack, according to school officials.

Donation address PEOPLE MAY MAKE CHECKS OUT TO Bright Futures Joplin and mail them to North Middle School, 102 S. Gray Ave., Joplin, MO 64801. A note that the donation is for the Adopt-an-Eagle program should be included on the memo line of the check.
