Out & About: Party through the Fourth and check out the new 'Transformers' movie

Jun 30, 2011 (The Fayetteville Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Happy birthday, America! You look great for 235.

Compared to most other, much older, civilized nations, you're still young and hip.

In case you need any cheering up, there are plenty of events throughout the region celebrating your birthday -- which you can learn more about in this issue.

Now turn that frown upside down and blow out your birthday candles -- all 235 of them. After all, you're the star of the party, and we're going to party well into Monday.

As a matter of fact, as a coworker pointed out to me, there are fireworks displays every night this weekend starting Friday (at Festival Park), Saturday (in Lumberton), Sunday (at J.P. Riddle Stadium), and Monday (at Fort Bragg and throughout the region).

No matter how old you might be -- 25 or 235 -- weekend-long fireworks are pretty cool.

------ Director Michael Bay's "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" hits theaters this weekend, and in 3D no less.

The cast, led by Shia LaBeouf, returns in what's being billed the best of the series.

Well, everyone minus Megan Fox. She's out, and model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is in.

Maybe Fox was tired of being little more than eye candy, which, let's face it, is all Huntington-Whiteley will be, too.

Who knows? Who cares? She won't be missed, though I'm dying to see how they explain her absence in the film -- if Bay even bothers.

We know what these films are really about. Just bring on the battlin' bots, explosions and popcorn.
