Young Alaska 'heroes' sought for scholarship programJun 28, 2011 (Anchorage Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Five young Alaska "heroes" will receive $1,500 scholarships and a trip to the Alaska State Fair this summer as part of the "Summer of Heroes" program sponsored by Alaska Communications and Boys & Girls Clubs. The call for nominations went out when the program was announced at a barbecue "bash" in Anchorage Sunday. Sponsors are looking for youths between the ages of 6 and 18 who have made an impact in any of several different ways: raising significant funds for a cause, saving a person's life, making a difference in school through education or sports, or otherwise making a significant contribution to his or her community. Nominees can be submitted by friends or family by filling out a nomination form available at alaskacommunications.com/summerofheroes and writing a 500-word essay about the nominee's accomplishment. Youths may also nominate themselves. The trip to the state fair in Palmer includes round trip airfare and accommodations. The deadline for entry is July 26. Other events associated with the program include: --4 p.m. Sunday, July 10: A barbecue at the Alaska Communications store, 600 E. 36th Ave. Representatives from Boys & Girls Clubs-Alaska will discuss the 2011 Summer of Heroes program. Glacier Pilots baseball players will be on hand to autograph baseballs and give away tickets to an upcoming Glacier Pilots game. The first 100 attendees will receive gift bags and others in attendance will be entered into a drawing for prizes including free phones, accessories, gift cards and more. --9 a.m. Saturday, July 23: Run For Good 5K (Anchorage). --8 a.m. Sunday, July 24: Boys & Girls Clubs of the Tanana Valley's 2011 Golf for Kids (Fairbanks). --Sunday, July 31: Boys & Girls Clubs of Alaska Soccer Jamboree (details pending).
