MIDSTATE MENU: Get the inside scoop on Turkey Hill ice cream

Jun 09, 2011 (The Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Now, I know I just wrote about ice cream in all its glory on Tuesday, but it's hot out there and people want their frozen treats (as witnessed by my failed trip to McDonald's last night for a Rolo McFlurry -- they were out of ice cream!) Today, I wanted to let you know about a new attraction sure to cool you down in neighboring Lancaster County. The Turkey Hill Experience opened in Columbia last weekend, and features "more than 26,000 square feet of unique exhibits, interactive activities and a creamery," according to a press release. Similar to Hershey's Chocolate World at Hersheypark, there are no actual production lines at the Turkey Hill Experience.

As part of the interactive, self-guided tour, guests can visit the ice cream area, tea area and a section talking about the Turkey Hill Dairy Store. Probably the most exciting part is in the ice cream area, where you can create your own ice cream flavor, packaging and then star in a commercial. Unfortunately, I don't think you actually get to taste your personalized ice cream. The cost for the interactive area is $11.50 for adults ages 18-61, $9.50 for juniors ages 5-17 and seniors 62 and older, and free for children 4 and under.

There is also a free part to the Turkey Hill Experience, where guests learn about the Frey family and Lancaster County history.

If you do want to experience some fresh Turkey Hill ice cream and iced tea, the Creamery at the Turkey Hill Experience offers ice cream cones, sundaes and shakes, as well as a selection of sandwiches and other light fare.
