[June 23, 2011] M'sian govt websites 'prepared' for cyber attacks Tweet Jun 23, 2011 (The Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- PETALING JAYA (THE STAR/ANN) -- Malaysian government websites will be resilient enough to face any kind of cyber attack. "We are determining their readiness to face attacks and are making recommendations on what they can do to prepare," said CyberSecurity Malaysia chief executive officer Lt-Col (Ret) Husin Jazri. He said the sites would be resilient to any kind of cyber attacks, "even if the attack is announced in advance or a surprise attack". CyberSecurity Malaysia, responsible for the nation's borders in cyberspace, is currently conducting a technical evaluation of all computer networks in critical national information infrastructures. A hacker group known as Anonymous had threatened the government websites and on June 16, the sites were hit by a distributed denial-of-service attack, causing them to crash. Some 200 websites, both government and others, were affected. Since then, another threat has been posted online and this time the website of the Prime Minister's Office is the target. The message on YouTube, purportedly made by Anonymous, said the attack would take place at 8.37pm on July 4. "From our analysis, we consider this second threat a serious matter," said Husin. However, the attacks are now believed to have been made by local hackers rather than Anonymous, which has claimed responsibility for attacking companies such as Visa, MasterCard and PayPal in recent times. The online group of "hacktivists" has not claimed responsibility for the cyberattacks in Malaysia. Police have identified several local hackers who took part in the June 16 attack, and that these culprits would be brought in for questioning.
