Modo Labs and Harvard University Receive 2011 MITX Innovation Award

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. --(Business Wire)--

Modo Labs™, a leading provider of open source content delivery solutions for mobile platforms and devices, today announced that it received the 2011 MITX Innovation Award in the Best User Experience category for its work with Harvard University's mobile project. The MITX Innovation Awards recognize technology innovations developed in New England. Modo Labs and Harvard University used the Kurogo Mobile Framework, a mobile development platform that empowers educational institutions and corporations to easily create rich mobile sites, to design the award-winning Harvard Mobile project.

Powered by Kurogo, the Harvard Mobile project is part of Harvard's broad initiative to improve experiences for students, faculty, staff, visitors and neighbors who interact with Harvard's campus and community. The MITX Innovation Award recognized Modo Labs and Harvard for creating an "engaging, intuitive navigation that enhances the overall user experience and simplifies the use of the product." The awards were presented at the MITX Innovation Awards Ceremony on June 16th at the Westin Boston.

"It's an honor to be recognized in the Boston-area technology community, an environment that demands, encourages and supports excellence and innovation," said Eric Kim, vice president of user experience for Modo Labs. "Working with the top-notch team at Harvard, Modo Labs built a user interfce that successfully pulls data from numerous disparate sources and presents it in a seamless and easy-to-navigate format."

A panel of judges, comprised of leading technology executives, venture capitalists and MITX members, evaluated each nominee, selecting the Harvard Mobile project as the winner in the Best User Experience category. Modo Labs and Harvard began work on the project in June 2010, focused on delivering essential Harvard University information to the mobile user. Harvard Mobile provides information on current research and innovation, real-time shuttle bus tracking and alerts, an interactive campus map, a searchable people directory and many other modules.

"Kurogo's ability to build sophisticated user interfaces makes mobile development quick and easy, significantly reducing timelines from months to weeks," said Andrew Yu, chief executive officer of Modo Labs. "The Harvard Mobile site exemplifies excellence in usability, and the MITX award is a strong validation of Kurogo's capabilities."

The Kurogo Mobile Framework is offered under the MIT (News - Alert) license and is available for download, free of charge, at http://kurogo.org. Kurogo includes contributions from Harvard, MIT and more than 30 leading universities around the globe through iMobileU, a community of higher education institutions committed to advancing the progress and innovation of mobile development. "We created the Innovation Awards to give exciting digital and Internet companies a chance to showcase their ideas and creativity," said MITX President Debi Kleiman. "This year's winners represent the very best of New England's talent, and MITX is thrilled to honor their achievements."
