(Canadian Press Broadcast Wire (Canada) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MORNINGPREP-MORNINGPREP-MORNINGPREP-MORNINGPREP ! CYBER CORNER ! IN THE NEWS: INTERNET SALES TAXES EYED AS BUDGET HEALERS AUSTIN, Texas (AP) _ Imagine if states had an extra $23 billion dollars to toy around with come budget time. They could _ if they could find a way to harness all the sales taxes from Internet retailers. State officials say the windfall from collecting taxes from online sales could go to hire teachers, policemen and provide social services _ many of which are in danger of being cut because of a shortage of funds. But as much as everyone agrees the money will help, it's also agreed collecting taxes from online retailers is hard. Internet retailers are required to collect sales tax only when they sell to customers living in a state where they have a physical presence, such as a store or office. When consumers order from out-of-state retailers, they are required under state law to pay the tax. But it's difficult to enforce and rarely happens.

IN THE NEWS: NEW BATCH OF WEB SITE ADDRESSES COMING WASHINGTON (AP) _ Are you ready for the next big change to come to the Internet? This one has to do with domain names, forcing suffixes like .com, .net and .org to make room for addresses that end in ``.bank'' and ``.Canon.'' The organization that handles the Internet address system is getting ready to approve a plan to expand the type and number of domain names. If ICANN approves the plan as expected, it's expected the new names can start showing up as early as next year. Right now, there are more than 3000 suffixes available today, most of them country-code domains. Under the new plan, it's expected that hundreds, if not thousands more suffixes could be created.
