Yamaha Launches World's First Audio and Voice Hub Codec IC YMU828 with Built-in Dual Mic Noise Suppressor


TOKYO, June 20, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Yamaha Corporation (Head office at 10-1, Nakazawa-cho, Naka-ku, Hamamatsu-shi, Shizuoka, Japan; President: Mitsuru Umemura ) announced on June 20 that it would begin mass production and shipments of its new Audio and Voice Hub CODEC IC (1) for Smartphones and Tablet PCs in October 2011.

Background Yamaha began shipments of Audio CODEC ICs for Mobile Phones in 2005. Demand has risen for CODECs that act as a hub for analog and digital signal processing, with an increasing variety of audio and voice signal types compatible with smartphones. There is increasing demand for Noise Suppressors, which cut the amount of ambient noise when speaking on the phone, as well as Echo Cancellers, which make hands-free operations possible. There is also a growing market for an Audio CODEC IC with all of these functions built in.


Overview The new YMU828 is an Audio and Voice Hub CODEC IC for Smartphones and Tablet PCs that packs hub functionality for processing of various types of audio signals as well as Single or Dual Mic Noise Suppression and Echo Cancellation into one chip. The Noise Suppressor and Echo Canceller for Single or Dual Microphones removes both stationary and non-stationary noise, improves audio quality both for outgoing and incoming voice, and increases quality with the built-in AudioEngine (TM) DSP (2). The built-in Dual Mic Noise Suppressor is an industry-first for an Audio CODEC IC.

An optimized Echo Canceller and Noise Suppressor can make high-performance hands-free operation possible, even with the micro speaker which is used in most mobile phones. The Noise Suppressor can be used both for outgoing and incoming voice and, with the dual use of Speech Speed Control functionality and improved audio quality made possible by AudioEngine (TM) technology, clear, easy-to-understand audio is now a reality for both the speaker and listener. The AudioEngine (TM) technology DSP processing creates high-quality source audio for improved audio quality and performance in digital equalizers, Harmonic Enhancer and dynamic range controllers, making high-grade audio output possible even with miniature speakers and headphones. It also makes devices compatible with Dolby Mobile 2 (3).

The CODEC includes all necessary circuits such as stereo DAC, 3-channel ADC (stereo + mono), a Class G cap-less stereo headphone amplifier, a receiver amplifier, 3 independent digital audio input/output, 3 microphone input, digital microphone input, analog input/output, a mixer, volume control and more in easy-to-use construction. In the power saving mode, the CODEC can minimize battery usage by saving power on a block-by-block basis, making it the optimal choice in terms of input and output for a range of sound sources and audio signals for smartphones and mobile devices including voice, music, analog/digital TV and radio.

The YMU828 and YMU829 Audio and Voice Hub CODEC ICs for Smartphones and Tablet PCs, which are set to hit the market simultaneously, YMU829 comes with the smaller package and limited functions of YMU828.

Samples of both models are currently available. While making both models available to a range of customers, mass production and shipping are planned in October 2011 for YMU828 and in August 2011 for YMU829.
