MTN Marks World Desertification DayJun 17, 2011 (Ghanaian Chronicle/All Africa Global Media via COMTEX) -- MTN Ghana has organized an environmental awareness programme for students of Accra High Senior School, on the need to protect the environment from being destroyed in the country. The programme formed part of the company's 5th Edition of 21 Days of Yello Care programme, which is an initiative of the MTN Group to give the opportunity to all MTN employees across its operating countries, to volunteer their services to the communities in which the Group operates. The students were grouped into various teams and deliberated on issues such as mining, land degradation, water body management, littering of the environment, deforestation and recycling among others. Speaking at a symposium dubbed 'Our Environment, Our Future' to mark world Desertification Day, which falls on 17th June in Accra, yesterday, Board Member of MTN Ghana Foundation, Mrs. Nabilla Williams observed that human activities are having huge negative effect on the environment. According to her, man is currently faced with problems of desertification, oil spillage and pollution in its different facets, illegal felling of tress and improper waste disposal. "With our combined efforts, we can change our ways to make a positive impact on the environment. Please let's brainstorm on how we can change our habits and make a difference in the environment", Mrs. Williams appealed. Meanwhile, as part of marking this year's 5th edition of the 21 Days of Yello Care has witnessed MTN planting 10,000 seedlings through out the country. The company also took part in World Ocean Day which falls on 8th June every year to clean beaches and banks of some river bodies. |
