Health reviews lead to closures

Jun 17, 2011 (The Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Two local eateries were closed recently after health inspectors found unsanitary conditions deemed a danger to public health.

Chef Cao's, a Chinese food restaurant on University Drive, and Mugwall's, a coffee shop on Harvey Road, were both closed for a mandatory 24-hour period and forced to pay a $5,000 reinspection fee after failing inspections.

Both establishments have since been reopened after passing a follow-up inspection.

Inspector Shelley Hobbs said Chef Cao's, which she inspected and closed on June 13, would have received a 74 on inspection, but she decided to close the restaurant when she found rodent droppings in a storage area for dry foods.

During the inspection, she said, the owners called a pest control company to address the issue and when she returned for inspection on June 14 she could find no evidence of rodents.

"Everything was cleaned out and very well sanitized when I came back," she said.

Other infractions that were documented included shrimp and scallops kept at an improper temperature, cross-contamination of raw meats and eggs with vegetables, and failure to date-mark some food, as required by law.

Mugwall's was inspected on June 10 by Billy Sanders and received a failing score of 65.

"There was just a general state of filthiness is about the easiest way to describe it," he said of the coffee shop.

Sanders said countertops were sticky and unsanitized, nearly half of the thermostats on coolers containing raw eggs, milk and cheeses were not working and the units were not properly cooling. In addition, floors were unmopped and dishes were not being properly sanitized.

When Sanders returned for inspection on June 11, all of the foods in the coolers had been thrown out, the floors and counters were mopped and all other violations had been corrected, he said.

The establishment was allowed to reopen that morning.
