BRIEF: Australian police charge 11 over internet child porn ring

SYDNEY, Jun 15, 2011 (dpa - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Australian police have charged 11 men they say were involved in an internet child pornography ring which included scenes of bondage, torture and the rape of children as young as five, media reports said Wednesday.

The arrests last week were part of an international police operation run by the Virtual Global Taskforce and coincided with the arrest of more than 24 people in New York.

Australian Federal Police Commander Grant Edwards said Wednesday the men had been swapping pictures of the sexual abuse of children on peer-to-peer file-sharing networks.

Edwards told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that police had set up an account on the network posing as paedophiles for more than a year to track down the network members.

Among the men arrested in Australia was a teacher at an exclusive school, a scout leader and a cat breeder.

Edwards said most of the offensive material originated overseas but police had rescued two children in Australia who were being abused by their carer.
