IMF network opens investigation into unknown hacker attack

Jun 13, 2011 (CORPORATE IT UPDATE via COMTEX) -- 13 June 2011 -- The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has opened an investigation into an attack on its computer network by an unknown hacker, the Financial Times reported.

David Hawley, a spokesman for the IMF, confirmed the probe, which is led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

The breach in security raises serious concern as the fund has private information that could be of great value to investors, especially as regards rescue plans for troubled western European countries.

Although the perpetrator, the target or the method used to break into the network are still unknown, there is no evidence of access to any sensitive information.

IMF staff were informed of the breach on 8 June, but officials said the hackers were not likely to have acted as part of a fraud scheme. Some experts said that the attack might have come from a national government, but people close to the case ruled those speculations as premature.
