Allentown to unveil its new police patrol station next week

Jun 10, 2011 (The Morning Call - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Allentown Police Department's patrol division will unveil its new home next week.

An official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the city's new patrol station, 1005 W. Hamilton St., is scheduled for Thursday at 2:30 p.m. After the ceremony, the station will be open for public tours until 6 p.m.

The station, the former home of the city's parking authority, will be occupied by the 150 members of the patrol division -- patrol officers and captains -- on July 11.

The new station will have locker room and shower facilities for the first time, city officials said. The station will also have two video-monitored interview rooms, video security throughout the building, bulletproofing, a new muster area and gun pit, an armory, new flooring and interior and exterior painting.

The department's administrative offices, detective bureau, youth division, internal affairs and police records and cellblock will remain at the Public Safety Building, 455 W. Hamilton St., next to City Hall.

"The department has been slowly running out of space for years," Mayor Ed Pawlowski said in a news release. "This new station offers our officers amenities and safety enhancements that we just have not been able to provide at the existing location. The new station is also in an ideal more centralized location." To see more of The Morning Call, or to subscribe to the newspaper, go to http://www.mcall.com.
