Choctaw Nation hosts golf camp at Silverado Golf Course

Jun 10, 2011 (Durant Daily Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Approximately 180 kids filled Silverado golf course Thursday and Friday for the annual golf camp hosted by Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.

The camp, which saw the biggest turn out yet, is for boys and girls 10-18 years of age. The kids practice chipping, putting, driving range, and advanced players are able to play the course.

Camp counselors are with each group as they move from "station" to "station" around the golf course.

Friday afternoon, the kids will participate in a qualifying tournament. The two best boys and two best girls will be selected from the various camps that are held and will play at the state level.

Ed Bowe of ESPN Golf School, along with his partner, Dave Boivin of Golf Results, gave a playful presentation of various golfing skills.

Bowe showed the kids the proper way to hit the ball straight then showed them playful strategies such as "Happy Gilmore," "Robot," and "sneak attack." He showed other playful swings like hitting a moving golf ball.

For participating in the camp, all kids received a free set of golf clubs, along with a t-shirt. Whomever answered Bowe's golf trivia questions correctly received a box of brand new golf balls.

Choctaw holds 21 camps throughout the season for various sports, such as golf, baseball, softball, and football.
