San Jose Mercury News, Calif., Action Line column [San Jose Mercury News, Calif.](San Jose Mercury News (CA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) June 07--Q On Jan. 11 I contacted the Knights Inn in Wendover, Utah, reserved two rooms, and gave them my credit card number. I received a confirmation via e-mail, along with a confirmation number. In the middle of May, I started receiving calls from the front desk asking if I still wanted the rooms. I told them yes, that I have a confirmation number, and that my credit card number is on file. Today I received an e-mail and a phone call stating that my rooms were canceled. There are no rooms available in Wendover for this event (Speed Week). Can you help me? Jeff Balsamo Fremont A As it happens, Jeff, I can. I sent your e-mail to the Knights Inn. There is room in the inn for you after all. Your report back: "The Knights Inn seems to have changed their minds about canceling my rooms. I cannot express how much I really appreciate what you've done. "It is next to impossible to get rooms in Wendover for what is known as Speed Week. It is an event at the Bonneville Salt Flats where people land speed race across the salt flats in Utah. (In case you're wondering.) "If it is OK with you, I would like to bring you back an event T-shirt. They are pretty cool. What size do you wear? A Umm. Thanks for the offer, Jeff, but I have to decline (or give you my size). In any case, enjoy the event. Recall Janome America Inc. is recalling 600 Elna Sewing Machines because the inside wires can short-circuit and start a fire.
