TiERA Upgrades to Brocade 10 Gigabit Ethernet Network and Paves Way for IPv6 Transition

(Market Wire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) MOSCOW -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 06/07/11 -- To cope with the surging appetite for bandwidth and today's 24/7 Internet culture, Brocade (NASDAQ: BRCD) today announced that TiERA, St. Petersburg's leading Internet Service Provider (ISP), has upgraded its network infrastructure and dramatically increased bandwidth by deploying a multiprotocol label switching (MPLS)-enabled architecture from Brocade. Built using Brocade® MLX Series and Brocade NetIron® CER 2000 Series routers, the network infrastructure will improve service quality across TiERA's network, providing 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) performance while paving the way for a smooth transition to the IPv6 addressing system. As a result, TiERA is one of the first ISPs in Russia to become IPv6-ready.

According to Gartner, the emergence of more online video and bandwidth-consuming mobile applications will cause Internet traffic to grow approximately five-fold in the next three to four years. In the last ten years, Internet penetration across Europe has grown more than 352 percent. In Russia, it has surged by a staggering 1,826 percent. Today, almost 43 percent of the country's population is "connected"(1); testament to this growth, TiERA has seen traffic more than triple in recent months.

"Over the years, we have seen bandwidth demand grow beyond all expectations," said Valery Streltsov, general manager of TiERA. "Our old network had reached the point at which it could scale no more. The infrastructure would regularly fail at peak times, thereby leading to traffic bottlenecks and problems with clients receiving certain services. In addition, we had to look to the future and plan for IPv6 migration, so it was clear that we needed to upgrade our architecture." After a rigorous evaluation process, TiERA selected the Brocade MLX Series and Brocade NetIron CER 2000 Series routers to facilitate growth in this new environment. The new architecture gives TiERA the opportunity to aggregate as many as 32 ports of 10 GbE routing within a single Brocade MLX chassis, and benefit from rich IPv4, IPv6, Multi-VRF, MPLS and Carrier Ethernet capabilities without compromising performance. Additionally, as service providers look for ways to reduce network operational costs while increasing new revenue streams through over-the-top services, Brocade NetIron CER 2000 Series routers are purpose-built to help these providers save on space, power and cooling while extending wire-speed IP and MPLS services to the network edge without compromising performance.

Executing on the Brocade Oneā„¢ strategy that aligns to key customer imperatives, Brocade recently introduced several comprehensive updates and new products designed for service providers. Specifically, Brocade introduced significant software updates across its entire IP router portfolio in part to better support IPv6 interoperability with IPv4 networks. These updates included enhanced capabilities for the NetIron CER 2000 router to provide added scalability and accommodate future growth of IPv4 and IPv6 route tables. By enabling this smooth, secure transition to IPv6, Brocade will help service providers such as TiERA transform their networks toward a more scalable infrastructure for the future.

In terms of hardware, Brocade announced the general availability of the two-port 100 GbE and eight-port 10 GbE (8×10G-X) blades for the Brocade MLX Series. These carrier-class blades help reduce operational expenditures and promote service provider cloud expansion. The Brocade 100 GbE blades are priced at a fraction of competitive offerings, helping promote mass adoption of high-performance, scalable networking technology.

Streltsov added: "I can safely state that Brocade solutions have fully met our expectations. From the moment they were implemented, we have not noticed any disruptions in operation. We are now able to offer a more reliable service to our clients that will continue to scale and meet growing demands, while reducing operational expenditure and providing a blueprint for the future. Furthermore, thanks to the implementation of Brocade technology, TiERA has become one of the first Russian ISPs to support the new IPv6 protocol. This is a considerable business advantage for us since a large-scale client migration to this new addressing system is expected in the near future." TiERA received other valuable advantages as a result of the Brocade technology implementation. In particular, since the routers support MPLS technology, the company gained an opportunity to increase its corporate client base by offering an infrastructure that connects remote offices.

"Since Internet traffic is rapidly growing, ISPs find their networks under constant stress," commented Nickolay Umnov, general manager of Brocade in Russia and CIS. "They are forced to scale their IT infrastructure and compete for clients while maximizing profitability. Brocade is uniquely positioned to help ISPs build for the future. With products such as the Brocade MLX Series routers, we can deliver the headroom needed to remain competitive in today's market, while delivering non-stop performance. Our project with TiERA is an excellent example of all this." For more information visit www.brocade.com.
