Newberry Electric Cooperative names new head

Jun 02, 2011 (The Newberry Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Clinton man is taking over as president and chief executive officer of the Newberry Electric Cooperative.

The NEC Board of Trustees hired George Keith Avery as their new executive at its board meeting on May 24.

Avery previously served as director of ProTec Services, a division of Laurens Electric Cooperative in Laurens.

Avery will start his new duties with Newberry Electric Cooperative on June 6.

Avery began working with Laurens Electric Cooperative in 1979 and in 1994 he established ProTec Services (then known as ProTec Security) as a division of the co-op. ProTec Services provides security systems and other home services to co-op members.

"We are looking forward to having Mr. Avery here at Newberry Electric Co-op," said NEC board chairman William D. Kibler Jr.. "With his 32 years of co-op experience, we feel he'll be a great asset to the organization." "I am truly blessed to have this opportunity to serve the membership of Newberry Electric Cooperative," Avery said. "The cooperative has an excellent staff, a great board of directors and a strong history of service to the membership and the community. I can't think of a better place to work or live. I am truly looking forward to being a part of the Newberry team." Avery is an active member of his community, serving as a member of many Upstate chambers of commerces, the YMCA of Laurens, as vice chairman of the board of the S.C. Alarm Association and as a member of the Advisory Board of United Technology Corp., a worldwide company.

He also served as the District 55 school representative in the Piedmont Area Consortium and as a coach for the District 56 Science Olympiad Team.

Avery and his wife, Meredith, who is a nurse at Newberry County Memorial Hospital, currently live in Clinton. They have three daughters and one grandson.
