Temasek's Simon Isreal to be SingTel's next chairman

SINGAPORE, May 09, 2011 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Singapore Telecommunications chairman Chumpol NaLamlieng will be stepping down at the company's annual general meeting on July 29, and Simon Isreal will be his successor, the company said.

Local daily Business Times reported Tuesday that Isreal, 58, has been a non-executive and non-independent director of SingTel since 2003. He is expected to retire as executive director, president and board member of Temasek Holdings on July 1.

"With a proven track record in managing cross-border acquisitions and as an active international investor, Simon appreciates the challenges and opportunities of his new role," NaLamlieng said.

NaLamlieng became the chairman of SingTel in 2003. Prior to that, he was president of Siam Cement for more than ten years.

NaLamlieng's "acumen and insights have been instrumental in guiding the SingTel Group through its journey of transformation and helping to reinforce its position as Asia's leading communications group, particularly through periods of severe economic downturn as in the recent past," said Kai Nargolwala, lead independent director of the company.

SingTel also announced other changes to its board. Two non- executive and independent directors Johan Bradley and Nicky Tan will be stepping down after the annual general meeting.
