Microsemi Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) Midspans Are First to Support Internet's Migration to IPv6 Technology

(GlobeNewswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) IRVINE, Calif., May 9, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Microsemi Corporation (Nasdaq:MSCC), a leading provider of semiconductor technology aimed at building a smart, secure, connected world, today announced immediate availability of a software upgrade that enables its PowerDsineâ„¢ midspans to support the Internet's transition to the rapidly emerging IPv6 protocol. The company's latest version of its PowerView Pro remote-management software gives network administrators a seamless, transparent solution for ensuring that Microsemi's PowerDsine midspans can support the Internet's next-generation addressing technology.

"Microsemi continues to offer its customers the most advanced, up-to-date PoE solutions available, including midspans that deliver critical support for the industry's accelerating move to the IPv6 protocol," said Daniel Feldman, Business Unit Manager of Communications Power for Microsemi. "Our updated PowerView Pro software will enable Microsemi's customers to continue realizing all of the performance, efficiency and web-based remote-monitoring advantages of our PowerDsine midspans as they migrate their networks and associated network-powering infrastructure from IPV4 to IPv6 technology." IPv6 is the next-generation Internet Protocol (IP) address standard intended to supplement, and eventually replace, the IPv4 protocol that most Internet networks use today. IPv6 tackles some of IPv4's shortcomings -- most notably, a limited amount of remaining addresses -- by extending IP address field size from 32 bits to 128 bits. In January 2011, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) announced the depletion of free IPv4 address blocks, and said that all future allocations will be for IPv6 addresses.  "IPv6 support is available immediately for all of Microsemi's multiport managed gigabit midspans, including our 65xxG, 90xxG and energy-efficient 95xxG series products," said Sani Ronen, Senior Product Line Manager for Microsemi's PowerDsine Midspans. "Our support for IPv6 demonstrates our ongoing commitment to delivering the latest technological innovations, superior value, simplified deployment, and enhanced flexibility and scalability for our midspan product offering."  Microsemi PowerDsine PowerView Pro midspan management software has passed all IPv6 Ready Phase-2, 376 conformance tests as required by IPv6 Ready certification logo program (additional information can be found at www.ipv6ready.org). PowerView Pro software is delivered as a secure Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) v3 application and as a web-based remote management system, and allows simple and efficient monitoring and control of network devices, including power-off/power-on, unit scheduling, UPS monitoring and web-based monitoring.

About Power over Ethernet Technology PoE is a technology for wired Ethernet, the most widely installed local area network technology in use today. PoE allows the electrical power necessary for the operation of each end-device to be carried by data cables, rather than by separate power cords. It minimizes the number of wires used to install the network, resulting in lower cost, less downtime, easier maintenance and greater installation flexibility. The technology was pioneered by PowerDsine, a founding member of the IEEE 802.3af and IEEE802.3at Task Forces. The company became part of Microsemi's Analog Mixed Signal Group after its acquisition in January 2007.
