Azerbaijani second satellite to be financed through internal funds

Apr 29, 2011 (Trend News Agency - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Azerbaijan's second satellite will be launched into the orbit with the republic's own funds, a source close to the project told Trend.

Launching the second satellite will be urgent after the first Azerbaijani telecommunication satellite Azerspace will be placed into orbit.

The second satellite is under consideration to being placed in orbit at the orbital position of 43.2 degrees east longitude.

At present, Azerbaijan has four orbital positions: 43.2, 46, 58.5 and 95.9 degrees east.

The ITU added Azerbaijan to the list of countries, whose satellites will also be located at the above positions. A priority issue for the Azerbaijani government is now to negotiate the positions of 43.2, 58.5 and 95.9 degrees east to ensure that subscribers do not face any problems with their satellite coverage in the future.

Earlier, the ministry signed a long-term contract on leasing an orbital position for Azerspace with the Malaysian MEASAT satellite operator.

As Azerbaijan is not located at the orbital position of 95.9 degrees east, placing the satellite in this orbit is unreasonable. It covers a large part of China and Tajikistan. Nevertheless, the coordination issues of the orbital position 95.9 degrees east were resolved today.

At present, operations are underway to coordinate the other orbital positions. In particular, with from among the eight countries, out of the existing 35 countries, Azerbaijan has already agreed on coordinating the orbital position at 46 degrees east. Azercpace plans to coordinate the orbital position of Azercpace over the next five years.
