rPath Announces Support for OpenStack and VMware vCloud™ Director with rPath X6

RALEIGH, N.C. --(Business Wire)--

rPath, the service factory for on-demand IT, today announced that rPath X6, its newly-launched flagship product, now supports OpenStack and VMware vCloudDirector for private and hybrid cloud computing environments. OpenStack is the open source cloud operating system and emerging open cloud standard backed by more than 50 organizations and contributors across the globe. VMware vCloud Director allows enterprises and service providers to build and operate secure clouds.

This news comes on the heels of the recent public launch of rPath X6, which allows users to visually construct systems, generate new images and implement controlled system updates to manage the complete software and business services lifecycle. This delivers dramatic improvements in speed and control, reducing the time, cost and risk of system deployment and management across physical, virtual and cloud environments. Combined with OpenStack and vCloud Director, enterprises can now achieve maximum IT agility through cloud computing, integrating infrastructure for private and hybrid clouds with enterprise IT self-service and system automation.

"Involvement and support from key providers like rPath is critical to create a robust ecosystem of tools that help enterprises run OpenStack," said Stephen Spector, community manager for OpenStack. "rPath is an important innovator in the OpenStack ecosystem that could help drive enterprise adoption."

rPath X6 is the Service Factory for the Enterprise Cloud

Self-service private and hybrid cloud computing continues to generate considerable interest as pressure mounts on IT departments to deliver the kinds of simple, on-demand infrastructureservices that are readily available from public clouds like Amazon EC2. Leading research firm Gartner (News - Alert) predicts the overall market for cloud services to grow to $148.8 billion by 20141. Most IT organizations, however, lack the infrastructure and process maturity to provide the dynamic elasticity that is found in the public cloud - and most public cloud services lack the governance, management and control required for enterprise IT.

With this announcement, rPath's system automation and standardization features can be combined with OpenStack's elasticity and vCloud Director's requisition, approval and provisioning capabilities to provide customers with a holistic, tangible means of requesting, deploying, maintaining and dynamically scaling a complete IT system. With controlled, consistent services, platforms and compute capacity available on-demand for project leads and application development and testing groups, IT can now step out of the way and focus on higher-value tasks - freeing up resources and budget for faster product delivery and new innovation.

"IT is being held to a higher standard in large part because of the rise of public cloud services, which have become both the context and example for what IT must become, as well as a potential alternative to IT organizations that aren't able to achieve this model on their own," said Jake Sorofman, chief marketing officer for rPath. "With support for OpenStack and VMware vCloud Director, rPath is providing the technology foundation that IT organizations need in order to make the transformation into something that looks a lot like a public cloud service."

rPath is a founding member of the NRE Alliance, a high-profile coalition of independent vendors collaborating to deliver a complete solution for enterprise cloud computing by enabling best-in-class capabilities for self-service, automation and elasticity. Other members of the NRE Alliance include newScale (News - Alert), Eucalyptus Systems and MomentumSI. This same pattern - self-service, automation and elasticity - applies to rPath, VMware vCloud Director and OpenStack, providing IT organizations with another comprehensive option for building and managing private and hybrid clouds.

"rPath is committed to both the NRE Alliance and the pattern it exemplifies for enterprises looking to take advantage of the agility and cost advantages of self-service private and hybrid clouds," continued Sorofman. "rPath X6 is a critical, central component for effective software system construction, deployment, configuration and maintenance in any private or hybrid cloud initiative, and we consider our support of OpenStack and VMware vCloud Director yet another example of our belief that the ecosystem approach is becoming the way that cloud models deliver value to enterprises today."
