[March 31, 2011] TD Bank robber still at large Tweet NEWBURYPORT, Mar 31, 2011 (The Daily News of Newburyport - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Local police yesterday reported little progress in their search for the man they believe robbed the State Street TD Bank Tuesday afternoon. Marshal Thomas Howard said the search is continuing for the estimated 20- to 25-year old man last seen wearing a red Red Sox hat and a navy-blue shirt. Around 2:40 p.m., the man walked into the bank and handed a teller a note saying he had a weapon and demanded money. After the employee handed him an undisclosed amount of money, the man exited the bank, took a right onto State Street and headed toward Water Street and the city waterfront, according to police. Video cameras captured clear images of the roughly 5 foot 7 inch man who did not try to mask his appearance in any way aside from the baseball cap. State and local police canvassed the downtown area on foot, on bicycle and in cruisers for the suspect. A state police canine unit was used, as well, but the man remains at large. Detectives working the case have received some leads, but his whereabouts and identity are still unknown. Howard said when the man is finally caught, he will be charged with armed robbery, a more serious charge than robbery, even though it is unknown if he actually brought a firearm into the bank. Howard declined to comment on how much money the suspect got from the bank, saying it could negatively impact the department's investigation. As protocol dictates, Newburyport police alerted the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the robbery, and information regarding the suspect was forwarded to the New England State Police Information Network. Following the robbery, the bank closed down for the rest of the day, as police officers questioned employees and obtained physical evidence. The bank reopened yesterday.
