BRIEF: Verizon call center in Wilmington gets new director; old director headed to growing Columbia center

Mar 29, 2011 (Star-News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Verizon Wireless Call Center in Wilmington has a new director, the company said Tuesday.

Julie LaVertue comes to the center at Independence and Shipyard Boulevards from Bangor, Maine, where she was associate director of Verizon Wireless' call center there.

The Wilmington center employs about 1,200.

LaVertue replaces Tony May, who has taken over leadership of the company's call center in Columbia, S.C., the company said.

The center at Elgin, near Lancaster, S.C., will add nearly 500 people as it prepares for an influx of customers seeking tech support for the iPhone and other new products, May told The State of Columbia last month.

That center currently employs about 1,500 people.

Verizon Wireless is headquartered in Basking Ridge, N.J.
