University Computer Club Collaborating to Develop a Campus App

(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) WHEELING, W.Va., March 15 -- Wheeling Jesuit University issued the following news release: Wheeling Jesuit University Information Technology Services and the student-led Computer Club are collaborating to develop a University campus application for mobile devices.

In support of the project, Rick Bettencourt, a senior system engineer with Apple, Inc., will speak on campus at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 17. The hands-on lecture takes place in one of the computer labs located in the Acker Science Center, room 315. Employees and students will take part in the lecture.

"We welcome Rick to campus to further enrich our students," said Blake Williams '10, Wheeling Jesuit computer support analyst. "Our students are looking forward to collaborating to develop this app for the iPod Touch, iPhone and iPad." Bettencourt is a prominent software developer, architect and technologist. He graduated third in his class from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, majoring in Computer Science. Since college, Bettencourt has been employed by the Eastman Kodak Company, Apollo Computer Inc., HighSoft Inc., Building Block Software and Apple, Inc.

"The campus app will assist in connecting students and employees to campus life," said Ryan Schubert, computer club president from Philippi, W.Va.

"This app may include the campus event calendar, Parkhurst Dining Services menu, BlackBoard and our campus directory. We are in the beginning stages of the development process," Schubert added.

Sophomore Information Science major John Kotson is excited to attend the iOS app development speaker event. "iOS is the computer operating system for Apple mobile devices," he explained.

"The code used for programming an app for an iPod Touch, iPhone, or iPad is called Objective C. I'm hoping Rick can elaborate on the syntax," said Kotson, who is from Glen Dale, W.Va. "We are anxious to get the app up and running." "The University Information Technology Services is excited about this collaboration. We strive to offer our students engaging projects. This project is especially important because of the high market demand for App Developers," Williams said.

One of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States, Wheeling Jesuit is dedicated to helping students find their path in life, which translates into successful, rewarding post-graduate achievements. Since 1998, U.S. News & World Report has ranked it among the top institutions in the "Best Regional Universities" category.

The campus is home to the Robert C. Byrd National Technology Transfer Center, the Erma Ora Byrd Center for Educational Technologies(R), the NASA-sponsored Classroom of the Future, a Challenger Learning Center(R) and the Clifford M.
