Yakov Kreizberg, thrilling guest conductor at the Oregon Symphony, dead at 51

Mar 15, 2011 (The Oregonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Yakov Kreizberg, a guest conductor who made an indelible impression on the Oregon Symphony and its audiences in his four appearances, died today at his home in Monte Carlo, according to his concert manager. Cause of death was not revealed, but reports indicated he had suffered a long illness. His wife and two sons survive him.

Charles Noble, the Oregon Symphony's assistant principal viola, posted the news this afternoon.

Kreizberg was Chief Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Netherlands Philharmonic and Netherlands Chamber Orchestras. Here are his dates with the Oregon Symphony: March, 2003: Beethoven Piano Concerto No 1 (with Piotr Anderszewski), Mahler Symphony No. 1 January, 2005: Beethoven Overture to "The Creatures of Prometheus," Adams Violin Concerto (with Leila Josefowicz), Shostakovich Fifth Symphony February, 2005: Vasks Cantabile for Strings, Dvorak Cello Concerto (with Daniel Muller-Schott), Strauss "Don Juan," Hindemith "Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber" October, 2005: Bartok Concerto for Orchestra, Beethoven Symphony No. 7 As Noble points out, Kreizberg was one of the orchestra's best guest conductors.

"He was very much a personality of the Old World, patrician and soft spoken, but also very much a mensch, and beloved of most everyone who worked under him. The performances we did of Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, Beethoven's Seventh Symphony, and Mahler's First Symphony will forever be etched in my mind as defining musical experiences." Here's what I said about his performance of Mahler's First: "Kreizberg is an interpreter of big ideas, communicated in detailed exactness. He has two of the most expressive hands in the business, and he radiated rhythm from the podium. It added up to a kind of poetry of precision, with highly expressive results." -- David Stabler To see more of The Oregonian, or to subscribe the newspaper, go to http://www.oregonian.com.
