Versant and Fraunhofer FOKUS Demonstrate Power of Object Databases to Deliver IPTV Services

(GlobeNewswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) REDWOOD CITY, Calif. and BERLIN, March 8, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Versant Corporation (Nasdaq:VSNT), an industry leader in high performance data management software, and Berlin-based Fraunhofer Institute for Open Communication Systems (Fraunhofer FOKUS) today announced the results of a major applied research project into managing and controlling IPTV systems.

The two partners benchmarked the use of Versant's Object Database (VOD) within the Fraunhofer FOKUS Open IPTV Ecosystem, achieving impressive results in two vital use cases compared to Oracle's MySQL, a traditional relational database. In the first test, delivery of complex broadband content guide (EPG) information was eight times faster using Versant's object database, while in the second test, researchers noted a 50% improvement in speed while controlling IPTV services. This translates into faster performance for consumers accessing IPTV services and an ability for content providers to deliver robust, scalable services using less processing power and hardware in a cost effective manner.

Fraunhofer FOKUS has deployed the enhanced FOKUS Open IPTV Ecosystem with the Versant Object Database at two proof of concept sites in Singapore and Taiwan. Both sites are managed by the Open IPTV Forum.

Analysts project that the number of global IPTV subscribers will grow at an annual rate of 24 percent1 to 106 million subscribers by 2014. Databases are at the heart of successful IPTV systems and must provide fast access to complex data, integrate with evolving application code and support the requirements of millions of concurrent users. The results of the research found that, relational databases, which store data into rows and columns, are not as well-suited to manage complex data in IPTV implementations as the Versant Object Database, which performs up to 8x faster.

"The IPTV marketplace is growing rapidly as more and more consumers look to receive and interact with a wider range of television services through high speed broadband networks," says Dr. Stefan Arbanowski of Fraunhofer FOKUS. "Delivering and controlling IPTV services is extremely complex, with a need for speed, robustness and scalability. The results using our standards-based Open IPTV Ecosystem comparing different database types are clear – Versant's Object Database offers significant performance advantages for content providers, broadcasters and telecom companies looking to implement IPTV." The FOKUS Open IPTV Ecosystem provides a complete solution for open IPTV standards and end-to-end IPTV for both managed and unmanaged networks. The system is the first available end-to-end solution for the telecom R&D market. Service providers may purchase the system for proof of concepts, pilots or other research projects directly from Fraunhofer FOKUS.

"The initial results from our strategic research partnership with Fraunhofer FOKUS demonstrate the major benefits of the object database approach to IPTV service implementations," says Dirk Bartels, Vice President of Marketing and Product Strategy at Versant. "The integration of our technology with the Open IPTV Ecosystem provides a powerful solution for delivering high speed, interactive IPTV infrastructures that scale to meet user demand. Other than the initial IPTV use cases investigated with Fraunhofer FOKUS, we see a wide range of applications for our solution in the consumer electronics, telecom and broadcasting industries." The full results of the benchmarking study are available as a white paper which can be downloaded from http://www.versant.com/developer/resources/objectdatabase/whitepapers/ Versant Object Database The Versant Object Database (VOD) provides powerful advantages to developers creating C++, Java or .NET object models, supporting massive concurrency and large data sets. The advantages of VOD's performance and scalability provide for a more efficient production environment, often supporting 10x more concurrent users and 10x faster data access speed compared to relational databases.

FOKUS Open IPTV Ecosystem The Open IPTV Ecosystem represents a test environment and reference implementation for standardized IPTV, as specified by different Standard Development Organizations (SDO) including ETSI TISPAN (http://www.etsi.org/tispan/) and the Open IPTV Forum (http://www.oipf.tv/).
