BRIEF: EMC gains storage software market share

Mar 07, 2011 (Boston Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- EMC Corp. pulled further ahead of its competitors in the storage software market in the fourth quarter.

Researcher IDC pegged the Hopkinton company's share at 25.4 percent, compared to 23.8 percent in the fourth quarter of 2009. In money terms, EMC's quarterly revenue totaled $866.1 million, up from $734 million.

Symantec came in second with 16 percent (down from 17.6 percent), followed by IBM (no change at 13 percent), NetApp (9.2 percent vs. 9 percent) and Hitachi (4.4 percent, up from 3.3 percent) to round out the top five.

Framingham-based IDC said the total global storage software market totaled $3.4 billion in revenue in the fourth quarter, up 10.6 percent from the previous year and marking the fifth straight quarter of growth.

"The storage software market is in the midst of a sustained recovery, which is partly driven by new product innovations, and partly by a strong desire to address inefficiencies related to storing, protecting and managing corporate data," said Eric Sheppard, an IDC research director, in a statement.
